Connie was surprised that she fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. She must have been more tired than she realized. She'd been sure that thoughts of Barry would have kept her awake. Thank goodness that hadn't happened. At least it showed she was capable of keeping her head.

She stretched contentedly under the homemade quilt. Her first thought was getting out to Nutmeg. Her second thought was coffee, which at home was normally her first thought. This place must be getting to her.

Connie went through her morning routine in record time, actually skipping most of it. Moisturizer to combat the dry mountain air and a smear of lip gloss. Jeans, boots, shirt, bandanna, her hair jammed up under her hat and she was ready to go.

Skinny told them at breakfast they would be learning to steer. The first day, the horses not only knew where to go, but they were on a lead rein to make sure of it. There would be no one leading their mounts today. And, they would also be saddling their horses themselves. Dave and Annie would be there to help if necessary, but they were largely on their own.

Connie could barely wait to see Nutmeg. In just one day, she'd come to love the animal as if she were a valued friend. Today, with only Connie to guide her, they would become even closer.

As anxious as she was to get back in the saddle, Connie took the time to have a friendly conversation with her table mates. Sipping her coffee, she glanced around the dining room and noticed that, once again, Barry was absent.

“If you're lookin' for Chambers, he's out at the other end of the valley. Expect he already had his breakfast out there with the hands,” Skinny told Connie, enjoying the blush that stained her cheeks.

“Have you known Mr. Chambers a long time?” Paula asked innocently.

“No, not really. In fact, I hardly know him at all. He's an acquaintance of my future sister-in-law.” Connie felt that was close enough to the truth to satisfy them. Maybe not Skinny, who seemed to have a sixth sense when it came to people and horses.

“You two certainly seem friendly enough,” Chase snapped at her.

“Not really,” Connie snapped back. “I didn't even know he rode, much less that he would be here.

“Okay, folks, let's head out,” Skinny ordered, stepping in before the bickering escalated to fireworks. He did enjoy these little dramas, though.

Connie's temper cooled as soon as she saw Nutmeg waiting patiently for her. Nutmeg gave a soft whicker and tossed her head as Connie approached. Could it be that the horse already knew her?

She picked up one of the apples from the bucket and offered it to Nutmeg and rubbed her neck while she ate. She laughed when Nutmeg bumped her hand, hoping for more.

“I've been told not to spoil you, but I have to admit, you're a good little beggar.”

Connie peeked over Nutmeg's back, and seeing Skinny busy with Paula, sneaked her another apple.
